  1. This week two of my mentees (TP and Nicole) observed writing sessions during our mentoring time. Lauren has also stated that she's comfortable to open up our mentoring times, on a week-by-week basis, for potential drop-ins. I'm very excited that my mentees are progressing to the point of observing sessions.

Lauren hasn't done much observation (she was sick last week, which sort of threw things off track), but we've been meeting each week to discuss the class.

  3. So far both of my mentees seem very confident about tutoring and the course. We have been beginning our sessions together by discussing their recent observations, and addressing any questions and concerns that may have come up. Both seem very aware of the various tutoring techniques, and which approches might be best for different students. For the most part, both of them want as much real experience as they can possibly get. I have mentioned that they can start to participate in my weekly tutoring sessions with regular students if they'd like, and both agreed they could learn most from this.

We also plan to begin workshopping their drafts for the first paper due in the course. Both mentees seem to have plenty of observing experience to write thorough papers. Overall, I am impressed with the eagerness both have shown during this process.

  4. Hey all!

This week, Sarah came in to observe during her mentoring session. I am encouraging her to do so because I know that she is stressing about the whole "not having enough time" issue as well as getting her draft done for the case study.

Will and I had a mentoring session this week. We just talked about issues and when he should come in to observe.

As far as Justin goes, he hasn't been in. However, he did inform me that school has been taking up a lot of his time.

So, not much is happening. I just keep encouraging them to observe as much as they can so they have a variety when it comes to the paper.

  5. Hey Kids!

Last week Jake and I discussed how to handle the idea of working on top of school and such. Since it's midterm time, he's a little stressed with his classes so we talked about how to balance work and school. I think this relates to tutoring a lot because students will come in stressed out about classes and sometimes we have to help them "chill out".

Taylor and I spent most of the sessions talking about the whole feminist theory vs patriarchal ideas. We talked about how dubbing this idea as "feminist" can ruffle some feathers. We ended up discussing how our gender as tutors can affect how sessions go. We've all seen it, sometimes as a female tutor you get that male student that wants to act like man, or male tutors sometimes get called "insensitive". Obviously these are vast generalizations but this instances do happen.

Nicole and I also talked about feminist theory. She also was able to come in on Friday and observe one of my weekly students. I'm going to start cotutoring with her as soon as possible

Jake was able to observe another tutoring session during our mentor hour. I look forward to hearing his reaction.

  6. Nora and I discussed the class, and how there isn't actually much to talk about because they aren't meeting weekly for the next few weeks. She has been struggling with the readings, she says they are dense and repetitive, although I keep encouraging her that they definitely pay off in the long run. I told her that while she may not see the point of them now, and that while she may not intentionally apply the strategies as a tutor, the readings inform our techniques and experiences whether we are aware of it or not.
She has done a moderate amount of observing so far, and I continue to encourage her to get as much observing done as she can.

While Sarah is not my mentee, as roommates we have had many conversations about tutoring.
